Carolina Parakeet Lemons
The Carolina Parakeet was native to eastern North America,
where they lived in flocks of 100 - 1,000, seen in upland forests, forest edges, wooded
floodplains and agricultural lands.
Naturalists noticed declining populations of the once-common Carolina Parakeets as
early as the 1830s.
By the end of the 19th century, they were restricted to Florida.
Factors that contributed to their extinction, included feather and egg collection, habitat loss, the pet trade and the parakeet's social behavior. They were a nuisance to farmers who found it easy to kill large quantities due to the bird’s congregation habits
This is one of my favorite birds to paint, remembrance of the beauty and reminder to conserve what we still have.
