The Belted Kingfisher is widespread across most of North America but wanders widely, sometimes found in Britain, Ireland, Hawaii, Galapagos Islands, Greenland, Iceland, and the Netherlands.
They depend on water for food and can be found along streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, bays, or coasts in areas with perches.
During the breeding season, they may be found nested in areas with dirt banks for nesting holes.
